CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department bait car led to four arrests Tuesday.

Deashay Laquan Walker, 16, was arrested after surveillance recording showed him entering the bait car and removing a bag containing a laptop computer.

A short time later, Jarvis Alton, 20, and two juveniles were seen joining Walker in the car, which they then drove away in.

Dispatch and officers tracked their movement and disabled the vehicle on the 2800 block of Freedom Drive.

All suspects were charged with larceny of an automobile, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony conspiracy.

Walker confessed to taking the laptop out of the car to “sell on the street” because he needed some money. Taking the laptop added another larceny from an automobile charge as well as breaking and entering.

This is the eighth apprehension of car thieves using bait cars this year. Despite the arrests, authorities say auto theft incidents are down 17%, or 191 vehicles, compared this time last year.

The names and photos of the juveniles will not be released because of their ages.
