CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Both the east and west sides of Charlotte City Council changed representatives Tuesday night.

In district three, Lawana Mayfield becomes the first openly gay or lesbian council member in Charlotte with her victory over incumbent Warren Turner in the primary.

I'm hoping that I've opened a door for others," Mayfield said.  "Show up in community and doors will be open to you just from being who you are."

Her district covers an area from Tuckaseegee Road to Steele Creek Road.

Mayfield and her supporters gathered at the Charlotte Art League in the South End.  She says her 15 years as a community advocate will continue onto the council with some help.

“I just hope that the community will realize that what all of us will need is for the community to continue to show up—to show up at the council meetings, to make sure that their voices are heard,” Mayfield said.  "I think that supersedes anything else because the community issues are bigger than my relationship.
