CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Several stores in the SouthPark Mall will remain closed Tuesday while officials continue to investigate a roof collapse during a rainstorm Friday.

Officials met with engineers on Monday at the mall as they investigated what led to two large holes opening up near the Gap and Banana Republic.

Hundreds of people were inside the mall when six to eight inches of water flooded the area.

"Periodic building inspections are not something we do," said Jim Bartl, head of Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement.

Officials from the mall and from Code Enforcement were at the mall all weekend and said they haven't been able to pinpoint the cause yet.

"We're not sure.  It might have been clogged drains on the roof or perhaps it was the result of an original design flaw," said an official with Code Enforcement.  "We just don't know yet."

The Charlotte Fire Department does do regular inspections for fire safety, but looking at the overall building integrity isn't part of that process.

Inside the mall Monday, customers encountered security guards posted throughout the corridors.  They're keeping people out of the dangerous sections of the mall.  The entire center section is off limits.

Some loyal customers told NewsChannel 36 they're waiting until all the repairs are completed before they go back inside the mall.

"I did think about it with the kids and stuff.  I mean, that's kind of a scary thing that it just kind of caved in," said Jennifer Bennett, a mother of three who was shopping across street at Specialty Shops on the Park.

Over the weekend SouthPark Mall officials said they anticipate opening the stores impacted by Friday's flood as early as Tuesday touting the mall would be returned to it's "pristine" condition.

But as of Monday evening, the mall still had two gaping holes in the roof, kiosks tarped over, and the underground garage barricaded.

According to a count by our news partnter, The Charlotte Observer, about 90 of the mall’s more than 160 stores and kiosks won’t reopen Tuesday, including popular mainstays such as Banana Republic, Gap, Pottery Barn, Victoria’s Secret and Abercrombie & Fitch. It’s not clear when they will reopen.

Around 5:30 p.m. on Monday mall officials released another statement saying in part:

"SouthPark’s construction teams and local authorities are currently inspecting and assessing every portion of the damaged areas.  We will communicate an expected timeline for re-opening of affected stores as soon as the information becomes available."

Bennett said she's in no hurry.

"I trust SouthPark, and I think they'll do all the necessary repairs. And I don't think they'll put anyone in harm’s way."
