CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Filmmaker John Schwert, who drew attention with his acclaimed first feature “Among Brothers” on the 2005-06 film festival circuit, secured a theatrical release in Regal Theaters beginning May 14th, which has now been extended through May 27th, 2010. “In/Significant Others” will continue in exclusive exhibition at the Park Terrace Regal Theaters within the Park Road Shopping Center in Charlotte, N.C.
“In/Significant Others” premiered at the Boston Film Festival, where it won the top festival honors, and went on to screen at over ten additional international film festivals, winning the top awards at the Charlotte and Mammoth Film Festivals, as well as the Houston Worldfest.
“I started writing the script while screening ‘Among Brothers’ on the festival circuit,” explains Schwert. “So it feels appropriate that this film started off on the festival circuit, and it’s especially a privilege to be honored with the awards and the theatrical release after everyone worked so hard on the project.”
After pursuing a successful career in marketing within the Charlotte banking community, Schwert produced, directed and financed his first feature “Among Brothers” with a second mortgage on his home in Fourth Ward. The film was based on the actual events surrounding the unsolved murder of a college student in 1994. “Among Brothers” went on to screen at 17 international film festivals and drew attention with a two-hour Dateline NBC special, subsequently pushing South Carolina Law Enforcement to re-open the unsolved case.
His new film, “In/Significant Others,” is a multi-narrative fictional drama that navigates through the different lives of one city’s residents, each of whom is connected to the same murder investigation. The characters include an Iraq War vet returned home to an emotionally disturbed wife, a new father living in the shadow of a successful brother, a sister caught up in a web of addiction, and a cameraman who attempts to exploit the reality behind all of their stories.
The ensemble cast all have Carolina roots and include veterans Burgess Jenkins (Remember The Titans, One Tree Hill), Andrea Powell (The Gates, Songcatcher, The Limbo Room), and Scott Miles (October Sky), along with newcomers Brian Lafontaine, Mark Scarboro, and Brett Gentile.
A New York native, Schwert splits his time between Los Angeles and Charlotte, which is home to his company Fourth Ward Productions, and where “In/Significant Others” was filmed.
“North Carolina is fertile ground for the film industry, especially now with the 25% tax incentive” says Schwert. “It is much easier to get films made and to get things done here rather than the typical New York or Los Angeles shoots, and there is no shortage of good cast and crew talent here either.”
“In/Significant Others” began its theatrical release May 14th in partnership with Regal exclusively at the Regal Park Terrace Theaters within the Park Road Shopping Center. John Schwert can be contacted directly via email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 704-604-2947.
