CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Heavy rains sent McMullen Creek in south Charlotte over its banks Friday afternoon, flooding backyards with water that nearly made it into some people's homes.
"We had one more step before it would have gone over the deck," said Ramona Hagler as she looked out at the water that was pouring through her backyard on Johnny Cake Lane.
Friday was not the first time that area has had flooding.
"So far it hasn't gotten into the house. Last time it got within inches of the floor and then the floor buckled," said Hagler.
Two doors down, neighbor Brenda Jackson said one minute her house was high and dry and the next minute it was like living in the middle of a river.
"I've had enough and I can't sell the house because it happens so frequently," Jackson said.
Firefighters and police were kept busy answering calls for help all over the SouthPark area Friday evening.
On Scofield Road the water was so strong it lifted an iron grate right off of a storm drain. Kaisa Sharma could only watch the water come closer to her home.
"Instantly, within a minute, it started getting higher and higher. I saw my gate go down and I wondered when my car would go down. Very scary," she said.
There were no serious injuries reported by either Charlotte-Mecklenburg police or the Charlotte Fire Department.
