CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- SouthPark Mall announced late Saturday that more than two dozen stores in its newest wings will open Sunday, just two days after the roof collapsed during heavy rains and flooded part of the mall.
Stores in the Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Belk wing will open at 12:30 p.m., along with the Food Court (see list below).
Shoppers returned to SouthPark Mall one day after the roof collapsed in two places during heavy rain, but most of the mall was not open for them.
From the outside, the mall looked busy.
Outlying anchor stores – Belk, Dillard’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom – opened as usual.
A few restaurants like Cheesecake Factory, Maggiano’s, McCormick and Schmick’s, and City Tavern also opened their doors to diners. But inside, doors that lead to mall areas from the department stores were closed.
Through the windows, shoppers could see furniture piled up and some kiosks covered with blankets or tarps.
Blowers dried carpets in Belk, and a few parts of the accessories department were closed off with caution tape.
Stores in outlying parts of the parking lot, like Crate & Barrel, were not affected by the roof collapse and remained open.
“All representatives are working quickly to restore the impacted areas of the mall,” said spokeswoman Kristin Cowart in a statement. “SouthPark is working around the clock to restore the impacted areas of the center.”
The mall’s PR company said some interior portions of the mall are still closed indefinitely, and they will update the progress around midday Sunday.
