CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Interstate 85 north near uptown Charlotte was shut down during rush hour Thursday evening after a multi-car wreck.

At least two people needed to be rescued from their cars in the accident that took place near W.T. Harris Boulevard. Those victims were transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Medic.

Two red sedans and a silver sedan collided around 5:30 p.m., closing all four lanes at exit 45 in the University area.

Backups stretched for about six miles all the way to Interstate 77. All northbound lanes were reopened just before 8 p.m.
