CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Sophomore guard Luka Voncina is leaving the Charlotte 49ers basketball team.
Voncina was given a leave following the first semester to return home to his native Slovenia to attend to personal issues. He contacted the team Wednesday to inform them he would not be returning this season, according to 49ers coach Alan Major.
Major says he's "disappointed" Voncina will not return, but "we wish him nothing but the best in his future and understand that he wants to support his family."
The 49ers had high hopes for Voncina, who was averaging 3 points and 15.6 minutes during his first eight games this season.
The 49ers (7-5) open Atlantic 10 Conference play Wednesday night against Richmond at Halton Arena.
