MONROE, N.C. -- A woman has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for the death of her newborn baby girl.
A jury in Monroe on Wednesday found Erica Kelly guilty of second-degree murder in the baby's death.
The baby was found just a few feet from a trash pile in Waxhaw in February 2009. Prosecutors say they think Kelly wrapped her newborn in a shirt and left her there.
Kelly asked a judge for mercy, denying that she killed her child and saying she wanted to take care of another child.
