North Carolina man sentenced to eight years after shaking baby

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - A Forsyth County man has been sentenced to up to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to charges filed after authorities say he shook his 5-month-old son so hard that it resulted in rib fractures and brain injuries.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports 22-year-old Darien Anthony Petronella of Rural Hall was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty last month to attempted felony child abuse as part of an arrangement.

Assistant District Attorney Pansy Glanton said the abuse was reported in April 2015 after the child's mother took her son to the hospital after the child started vomiting and became lethargic. When doctors examined the boy, they found several rib fractures, bruises on his forehead, bleeding in his brain and blood on his brain as well as brain swelling.
