Police: Two students hit by a truck in south Charlotte

Two girls were hit by a truck while trying to get onto their school bus Thursday morning.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two students were hit by a pickup truck while crossing the street to get to the school bus early Thursday morning, police said.

It happened around 6:30 a.m. on Scaleybark Road near Aycock Lane in south Charlotte.

CMPD said the Myers Park High School students were trying to cross Scaleybark Road when they were hit. MEDIC said one child was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while the other was transported with minor injuries.

The bus driver told police the stop arm was out, which led investigators to believe that darkness, weather or distracted driving may have played a role in the accident.

Scaleybark Road was closed for a brief time following the incident but was re-opened around 7:40 a.m.

Officers said the white Chevrolet pickup truck that hit the students also crashed into a power pole. That pole remained intact, and the driver was able to leave the scene without needing assistance.

The driver remained on scene and will be cited for failing to stop for a stopped school bus, CMPD said.
