COLORADO -- The parents of a 6-year-old transgender girl are taking legal action against their child's former school after the district prevented her from using the girls' restroom.
Coy Mathis was born a genetically male, but was diagnosed with a condition in which Mathis identifies as a girl.
Until recently, Coy was treated like a girl at her elementary school, and was allowed to use the ladies' restroom. But then the district sent her parents a letter, stating that students were likely to become uncomfortable with Coy's continued use of the girls' restroom.
Mathis' parents pulled the child out of school and filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Division.
The district said Coy can use staff bathrooms or a bathroom in the nurse's office.
