RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- It's been almost 175 years since work on the North Carolina State Capitol was completed, and finally historians and architects are about to see architectural plans for the historic structure.

Not only was the building over budget when completed in 1840, but it seems the state never paid the architect who oversaw the final work. So he left, taking his drawings with him.

Not having those plans can be a problem when it comes to repairs. It also could be troublesome if the Capitol needed to be rebuilt after a fire or disaster.

For almost a year, architects have been taking photographs and making sketches and computer-generated drawings in a $75,000 project funded by the State Capitol Foundation.

Baseline plans are expected to be finished in about a month.
