ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- The mayor of Asheville has begun fasting and praying in hopes of solving the city's budget crisis.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/ZByZ9j ) Mayor Terry Bellamy has asked friends on her Facebook page to fast and pray for 24 days. The mayor is suggesting a limited diet as a fasting plan, and said she decided to ask others to join her after people told her they were praying for her.
Bellamy also said the 24 days has no religious significance.
Asheville faces a nearly $6 million budget gap it blames on a raft of Republican legislation aimed at taking away fees and revenue. City leaders have said they might close popular amenities like the WNC Nature Center and all city pools and athletics.
