CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte will not host the upcoming Republican National Convention in 2016.

The city announced Friday that after careful review by Governor McCrory, Mayor Cannon and local civic leaders, the city is not equipped to handle another convention so soon after the DNC.

“There is no question that we have the talent, resources, and facilities to carry out a successful convention. The Democratic National Convention was evidence of that. However, at this point, we feel that the most responsible and prudent course of action is to step back and possibly set our sights on the Convention in 2020, thereby giving us, our community, and corporate partners adequate time to prepare,” Mayor Cannon said.

Governor McCrory said that now, local human and financial investments necessary to do that would be better used on tourism initiative and growing jobs.
