CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- County Commissioner Jennifer Roberts is making a bid for mayor.
The Charlotte native and long time board member made the announcement Wednesday morning in front of family and friends at Freedom Park.
Roberts had hoped to be appointed by council members after former Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested as part of a corruption investigation. Democratic State Senator Dan Clodfelter was chosen instead.
Now Roberts is making it official that she wants voters to choose her in 2015.
“I have been honored and humbled by the outpouring of community support for our campaign,” said Roberts. “I am running for mayor because I feel strongly that this community needs someone who will work tirelessly to bring people together and build the team we need to make our city more transparent.”
Roberts says she'll spend the next few months, meeting with community leaders to assess what needs to be done.
