RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The former No. 2 leader in the North Carolina House will become head of the state agency that receives unemployment claims and disburses benefits.
Commerce Department Secretary Sharon Decker announced Wednesday that ex-Rep. Dale Folwell of Winston-Salem is the next assistant secretary of employment security.
Folwell is a consultant and private investor who served in the House for eight years and was elected speaker pro tempore in 2011. He lost in the Republican primary for lieutenant governor last spring.
Folwell arrives at an agency overhauled by fellow Republicans over the past two years following bad press about overpayments to displaced workers. The General Assembly agreed earlier this year to accelerate the repayment of $2.5 billion owed the federal government for jobless claims through benefit reductions and higher business taxes.
