ROXBORO, N.C. (AP) -- A former speaker of the North Carolina House has died.
The daughter of James Ramsey confirmed Friday he died at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro at age 81. Linda Ramsey said her father died Thursday from complications after a stroke.
James Ramsey was an attorney who served in the state House from 1963 through 1974. Ramsey was the Democratic speaker for one term in 1973 and 1974 as Jim Holshouser served as the first Republican governor of the 20th century.
Ramsey was a former Marine who attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received the state Order of the Long Leaf Pine last year.
Other survivors include his wife, three other children and seven grandchildren.
Ramsey's funeral is Sunday at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Roxboro.
