CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Two men who knew the man picked to become the next Secretary of Transportation for the Obama Administration before he stepped into the national spotlight say Mayor Anthony Foxx is well equipped to handle the job that lay ahead of him.

"Anthony impressed me-- even in those days as having a very special gift for politics," said political science professor Brian Shaw of Davidson College, "I think he will do well, I think he will do very well."

Shaw taught Foxx at Davidson College where he studied history. Shaw said he noticed very soon that Foxx had very special qualities. Qualities that Shaw said would take Foxx far.

"Anthony is not only a bright guy, a capable guy, he is also a quick learner," Shaw said, "He worked really hard."

Foxx still has to be confirmed by Congress before he becomes a member of President Obama's cabinet, but one person who has gets to vote said that he believes that Foxx's selection should be met with approval.

"He has sufficient exposure to transportation and the issues related to that," said Congressman Mel Watt, "I think all of those qualities will be beneficial to him."
