HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – A hand full of people protested the controversial Arizona Sheriff endorsing Jim Pendergraph for Congress on Saturday.
Activists stood outside Lancaster’s BBQ on Beatties Ford Road in Huntersville. They wanted to call attention to Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s record. Arpaio is the Sheriff of Maricopa County in Arizona.
In a press release, the protesters said Arpaio’s is harassing Latino families and building his political career.
Sheriff Arpaio is the controversial and known for his “Tent City Jail”, making inmates wear pink underwear, and his tough stance on illegal immigration.
His department is being investigated by the Justice department for alleged racial profiling.
“That's another battle I'm going to have to fight, and I am fighting that battle,” said Arpaio in an interview with NewsChannel 36.
“I'm an equal opportunity guy. I lock everybody up. So, what's this racial profiling problem” continued Arpaio.
The protesters held signs that read “hate is not welcomed here”.
Arpaio is in Mecklenburg County over the weekend to speak to local republicans and campaign for Pendergraph.
