Soon child abusers in North Carolina could face tougher punishments.
A law named after Kilah Davenport of Monroe is being reviewed by lawmakers this week.
Kilah's step-father is accused of beating the little girl, causing permanent brain damage.
If convicted under current law, he'll face a maximum sentence of just under eight years in prison.
Supporters of the bill say that punishment is too lenient.
