RALEIGH, N.C. -- A bill named after a local girl who was a victim of abuse was just signed into law.
Wednesday morning, the mother of 4-year-old Kilah Davenport was in Huntersville attending a child abuse prevention event hosted by CPCC, before she headed to Raleigh for the signing.
Kilah was severely beaten and suffered serious brain injuries.
Her stepfather was arrested and he'll appear in court on felony child abuse charges in June. He faces less than eight years in prison.
But the new law will increase that punishment to 25-years to life in prison.
