CARY, N.C. (AP) -- A previous Republican presidential nominee told a North Carolina crowd that former primary rival Mitt Romney has what it takes to be commander in chief and that President Barack Obama has fallen short in foreign affairs.

The Arizona Sen. John McCain and South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham emphasized military and international issues Tuesday while holding pro-Romney events with veterans and military families in Cary and Fayetteville.

McCain told the crowd at a Cary Veterans of Foreign Wars post that Obama has put the nation's safety at risk through military spending cuts and erred on military withdrawal plans from Afghanistan and the handling of last month's assassination of the U.S. ambassador to Libya.

Democratic U.S. Rep. David Price said later in response that foreign policy is one of the president's strengths.
