RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- President Barack Obama is pushing Congress to promote 21st-century manufacturing jobs with closer links between researchers like those at North Carolina State University and companies working together to invent, design and make new products.

Obama spoke at the Raleigh research university on Wednesday to highlight his administration's decision to launch a $140 million project to invent, design and make new semiconductor chips and devices for industrial and everyday electronics.

The White House plans in the next few weeks to announce two more manufacturing innovation hubs led by the Pentagon designed to push digital manufacturing and modern metals innovation.

The administration wants to establish up to 45 such institutes, but that will require legislation from Congress so they are funded. The first three are being funded with existing resources.
