RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Democratic U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan already is being targeted in her re-election bid with ads by critics of the federal health care overhaul.

But North Carolina Republicans also must decide in May who will challenge her in next November's general election. Do they want a powerful state legislator, a champion of the tea party or a staunch social conservative?

The GOP primary is shaping up as one between House Speaker Thom Tillis and at least four other candidates. Tillis has been leading the early money chase, and has support from Karl Rove and some congressional leaders.

The Rev. Mark Harris and Dr. Greg Brannon have support among tea party and Christian conservative voters. They're suggesting Tillis is too much like Hagan or too aligned with the party establishment.
