RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A North Carolina state senator who left his duties as leader of the chamber's tax-writing panel is back on the job one month after a falling out with fellow Republicans on taxes.

Sen. Bob Rucho presided over debate Wednesday in the Senate Finance Committee.

The Mecklenburg County Republican submitted his resignation as committee co-chairman in June because he didn't like the chamber's direction on taxes. Rucho and Senate leader Phil Berger initially sought to expand broadly the services subject to the sales tax. House Republicans and Gov. Pat McCrory didn't like that bill, and Berger offered an alternative Rucho opposed.

Berger never accepted his resignation as chairman, but Rucho declined to preside.

Rucho said he returned because he believes the final tax plan moved in the right direction toward reform.
