COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina House has overridden 53 of Gov. Nikki Haley's 81 budget vetoes.
State senators will take up the 53 vetoes on Thursday. A two-thirds vote is needed to override.
The House on Wednesday did agree with the governor on one veto that would remove $1.7 million from a program that state health officials use to regulate the building of hospitals and medical facilities and buying expensive equipment. Haley wants to end the Department of Health and Environmental Control's Certificate of Need program.
Little Mountain Democratic Rep. Walt McLeod says ending the program will cause anarchy in the state's health care system.
Other vetoes overridden would restore money to the South Carolina Arts Commission and keep DHEC vital records offices open in rural areas.
