A popular dog food brand has recalled one of their canned food products due to the potential of elevated thyroid hormone levels.
WellPet recalled a limited amount of their 13.2 oz 'Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs.' According to the FDA, the specific products recalled will have a best-by date ranging between February 2, 2019, August 19 and 30, 2019.
The FDA's recall release stated that the three best-by date codes of one recipe have the potential to contain "elevated levels of naturally occurring beef thyroid hormone."
Elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone may affect a dog's metabolism and can be associated with anxiousness, increased thirst, urinary output and weight loss, the FDA says.
"With prolonged consumption these symptoms may increase in severity and may include vomiting, diarrhea, and rapid difficulty breathing," the release says. The release also noted that the majority of studies showed pets' symptoms reversing once the animal stops eating products with elevated thyroid hormones.
