LAKE NORMAN, N.C. -- Lake Norman has 520 miles of shoreline, and with explosive growth over the past two decades, it is now dotted with millions and millions of dollars worth of custom homes.
One is a standout log home that took seven tractor trailer loads full of trees to build. It is just on the market at $4.2 million and NewsChannel 36 got an exclusive look inside.
“We’re actually in Catawba County in Denver,” real estate broker Wendy Smith of Keller Williams Realty Mooresville explained. The home is more of a lodge than a cabin.
“Having seen the logs coming in before they were stained and just brought in on these big cranes, I simply couldn’t imagine what I was going to feel when I walked in,” she added.
Smith described her first reaction as awe. She sold the owner, a log home builder, the land and says it looked like a skyscraper as it was being constructed.
“It is one solid log,” Smith explained, describing one of the home’s most distinct features, a granite inlayed staircase cut into a solid tree trunk that spans all three floors. “Everything feels welcoming and like you could have a party of three and feel very comfortable or a party of 50,” she said.
A custom kitchen leads to a large living room then to the room we noticed as soon as we pulled in the drive.
“This is just a grand room,” Smith said, describing the living room which runs the width of the house and has glass on both sides. It has a vaulted log-beamed ceiling and views to the loft above.
“You can have the mini mansions all over the lake but just to have one so unique is just something you don’t get,” Smith noted.
The unique features continue in the master suite. Lake views take your eye in one direction, the master bath in the other. The bath has a large stone fireplace, heated floors, its own vaulted ceiling and a jetted tub with a multi-head steam shower nearby.
“If there is a bathroom you could live in, it would be this one,” she said.
It is the lower lake level, though, where Smith says the homeowner spends most of his time.
Here, you’ll find what may be the ultimate man cave with a pool table, poker table, juke box and full bar.
“There is actually another kitchen down here but this is just the bar area,” Smith said as we headed across the hall into the home theatre. It is a place to relax when the weather doesn’t cooperate with all the activities outside.
The home has an outdoor kitchen near a custom pool. The private dock is located in a cove on the side of the home, Smith said, to reduce beating and battering your boat. There is a three car garage. But with it, you also get two detached shops making a grand total of nine bays, just in case you need a place to park your car collection.
But above all, it is the private tree-filled location that Smith says sets this luxury home apart.
“I mean you just don’t find five acres on the lake. You can find big homes, but you don’t get privacy,” she said.
