KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. -- The famous Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in Monday's storm.
The pier now has at least two gaping holes in the middle with large chunks of wood sticking out throughout.
The pier had survived many previous storms dating back to the 1950s, locals say.
Dare County emergency officials are still assessing damage to the structure as well as other parts of the area. Beach erosion is evidence throughout the Outer Banks from Sandy's rain and strong wind gusts.
