DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- One man was killed and two people were hurt after a chase ended in a fiery crash on North Carolina Highway 98 in Durham County.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says the chase started at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a man driving a Chrysler Crossfire tried to avoid a DWI checkpoint.

Troopers started chasing the man, who lost control of his car, crossed the center line and hit a truck with two people inside. Both vehicles burst into flames.

Both people in the truck got out and were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Crossfire driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

None of the people involved in the crash have been identified. A trooper hit a utility pole to avoid the wreck but wasn't hurt.
