ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- An Asheville police officer accused of assaulting a 3-year-old on Halloween is now facing additional charges.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reports (http://avlne.ws/SbWZYR ) the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office requested that 27-year-old Aubrey Gerrard Green be charged with assault on a child under 12 and a second count of misdemeanor child abuse. Green was originally charged with a single misdemeanor child abuse count.
An arrest warrant said Green hit the child's buttocks hard enough on Oct. 31 to cause "significant bruising." Police said the second abuse charge came for failing to report the incident. Green is not the child's father.
Green has been on paid administrative leave since Nov. 9.
The child's mother, 22-year-old Maggie Nicole Jones, also faces a misdemeanor child abuse charge because she allowed Green to hit the child.
