CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The bishop of South Carolina's largest black religious denomination says he was told to vacate his Charleston hotel room late at night because it was promised to someone else.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (http://bit.ly/1fqkXhO ) the Rt. Rev. Richard Franklin Norris was upset and so was Mayor Joe Riley, who stopped by a conference Norris was attending Wednesday to apologize.

Norris is Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Carolina and says he was told by a hotel staffer late Tuesday to vacate his room where he had stayed several days and had booked through the weekend.

Charleston Courtyard Marriott manager Beryl Rice says Norris' account is wrong and the hotel would never ask someone to move in the middle of the night.
