COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities have charged a 29-year-old Columbia man with killing another man at an apartment complex in a shooting that stemmed from an argument between middle school gang members.
Sheriff Leon Lott said Thursday that Kevin Lewis is charged with murder in the July 24 death of 25-year-old Howard Nemley.
Lott says Nemley and 23-year-old Eric Salley were watching the rival gang members argue over a girl, when Salley began provoking and cursing at the teens. One of the teen's mother called Lewis, who organized people who arrived in two vehicles.
Lotts says Salley ran away after being beaten. Nemley was shot as he fled, then shot again on the ground.
Lott says he wanted to clear up initial reports that Nemley was a bystander shot while holding his 3-year-old daughter.
