COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Columbia has rehired its former police chief.

The city says Randy Scott resumes his duties as the department's top cop on Wednesday.

Scott said last month he would retire effective Jan. 1, then reapply. Officials said Scott was one of two applicants.

Scott had been chief since 2010. He said his decision to retire was based on changes to the South Carolina Police Retirement System that limit financial earnings for all retirees, starting with the new year.

Legislative rules required Scott to take a minimum 15-day leave before seeking to get his job back. Last year, Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins retired and was reinstated under similar circumstances.

The city says Scott's salary will be $112,200, the same as it was prior to his retirement.
