WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Monday morning, two Wake County deputies are on administrative duty after they shot and killed a man who stole a cruiser and led them on a chase.
Authorities say a deputy was driving 35-year-old Jonathan Cunningham to a psychiatric hospital in Winston-Salem on Sunday.
Cunningham was sitting in the front seat without handcuffs on, and started fighting with the deputy, officials say. Then, the men got out and Cunningham escaped in the car when the deputy slipped in some mud.
Deputies say Cunningham eventually pulled off the road and ran into the woods, where he struggled with authorities and was shot.
NBC Charlotte asked why Cunningham wasn’t in handcuffs.
“That's the deputy's call,” explained Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison, “That's something that we leave up to the deputy-- if a person is calm. And sometimes handcuffs excite people.”
The two deputies are on administrative duty while state authorities investigate.
