CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A former Colleton County Sheriff's deputy has pleaded guilty to tipping a friend off about a federal drug investigation.
Former Lt. Fred Allen Inabinett pleaded guilty Tuesday to making false statements to federal investigators.
Prosecutors say Inabinett gave two false statements to FBI agents during a drug investigation in Colleton County. Prosecutors say agents were investigating drug dealers in the area last year.
Prosecutors say Inabinett told one of the dealers that his operations were the subject of a grand jury investigation.
None of the dealers' names have been released.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Alston Badger says Inabinett and the suspect had known each other since school.
Inabinett has been fired.
