CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- Horry County's interim police chief is the county's new chief of police.

Saundra Rhodes becomes the first female to head the county's police department.

The decision was announced at Tuesday's county council meeting in Conway. County administrator Chris Eldridge praised Rhodes' work to streamline the department and build ties with the community.

Rhodes is to take the oath of office Friday.

She was named interim chief in February when former police chief Johnny Morgan retired.

Rhodes began working for the department in 1993 as a detective. She has risen through the ranks as a sergeant, lieutenant and captain.
