CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Officials are trying to determine why an inmate died in the Charleston County jail
The coroner's office says 48-year-old Keith Rhue of North Charleston was found unresponsive in his cell around 4 a.m. Monday. An autopsy failed to determine the cause of death.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office turned the investigation over to the State Law Enforcement Division.
Sheriff's Maj. Jim Brady said medical staff at the jail evaluated Rhue and he was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital after suffering an apparent seizure.
Rhue had been jailed about a year since arrest in North Charleston. Prosecutor Scarlett Wilson says her office planned to seek a life sentence without parole when he went to trial next week on charges of armed robbery and a police chase.
