SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a 50-year-old man died after being struck by a train near downtown Spartanburg.

The Spartanburg County coroner's office identified the man Monday as Lester McCombs.

He was hit about 6 p.m. Sunday and died in surgery several hours later at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The coroner's office McCombs died of massive internal injuries after he climbed between two rail cars of a train in an attempt to cross the tracks while carrying his bicycle.

McCombs told officers the train was stopped when he started to cross.

The case remains under investigation.
