RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) --
The man died Tuesday afternoon while working in a four-foot trench.
His name has not been released.
N.C. State police Lt. David Kelly says about three feet of dirt covered the man.
Kelly said the man was installing a water line for the city. He worked for J.F. Wilkerson Contracting Co. of Morrisville.
His body will be sent to the state medical examiner's office to determine how he died.
The North Carolina Occupational Health and Safety Division will determine whether the company followed safety standards. Labor Department spokesman Neal O'Briant says that could take several months.
