FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Detectives in Cumberland County have arrested a man after investigators say he choked his wife and injured a deputy trying to arrest him.
The sheriff's office said Thursday that 50-year old James Walter Gillich Jr. of Hope Mills is charged with assault by strangulation, second-degree kidnapping and assault on a female.
Investigators said Gillich grabbed his wife by the throat Wednesday night and pushed her until she was backed up against a wall.
A statement from the sheriff's office said the deputy injured his knee when Gillich became aggressive as the deputy tried to put handcuffs on him. The deputy was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he's expected to undergo surgery.
Gillich is jailed under a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
