MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (AP) -- The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a man who had been fishing on the south end of Portsmouth Island northeast of Morehead City.

The Coast Guard says 57-year-old Bill Vestal was last seen going under water late Monday afternoon at Drum Inlet.

A helicopter from Elizabeth City searched Tuesday. National Park Service personnel at Cape Lookout National Seashore conducted a shoreline search for Vestal.

The Coast Guard covered about 40 square miles in the search over a five-hour period.

Carteret County 911 dispatchers had alerted the Coast Guard about the missing man. The Coast Guard sent a boat from Hatteras Inlet and a helicopter from Elizabeth City.
