NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- North Charleston's mayor has chosen a new police chief to replace Jon Zumalt, who announced his retirement last week.
Mayor Keith Summey said Wednesday he has chosen retired law enforcement veteran Eddie Driggers to take over when Zumalt leaves at the end of January.
The 58-year-old Driggers is deputy senior chaplain for the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy.
Summey says many of his officers know Driggers and like and respect him.
Eleven years ago Zumalt was hired after a national search and a review committee that sent names for the mayor of the state's third largest city to consider.
Some city council members say they are surprised by the fast decision this time.
Driggers would not talk about the selection process, saying only that he is humbled by the offer.
