RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) -- N.C. 12 on Pea Island is open again to four-wheel-drive vehicles, but authorities warn that rapidly changing weather conditions could force them to close it again with little notice.

State Department of Transportation engineer Jerry Jennings says high tides and strong winds could force another closure of the road.

The road is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.  During those hours, Dare County first responders escort drivers before dawn and after dusk as a safety precaution.

Hurricane Sandy and last week's nor'easter damaged the road. It opened Saturday to four-wheel-drive traffic, then closed again Tuesday evening because of significant ocean overwash on the road north of Mirlo Beach.

The ferry from Stumpy Point to Rodanthe is continuing as scheduled. Extra ferries have been added from Swan Quarter to Ocracoke.
