TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) -- A North Carolina woman was struck and killed by a car as she tried to cross a highway in southern New Jersey.
Toms River police say the 50-year-old Bladenboro resident, whose name was not released, was struck on Route 37 East around 10:30 p.m. Saturday. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say the woman had been staying at a nearby motel, but further details were not disclosed.
The Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/11y7V9D) reports that the accident is the fifth fatal crash on Route 37 this year and the third involving a pedestrian. Six people have been killed overall in the crashes.
No charges have been filed in the accident, but an investigation is ongoing.
