RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Investigators say three relatives conspired to kill a 64-year-old man who lived in their home.
Dorchester County sheriff's deputies said 37-year-old Sonny Ray Jones Jr. sneaked up to Jimmy Edwards as he fed his chickens in his backyard on Feb. 1 and fired three shots into his head.
Authorities say Edwards' stepdaughter, 54-year-old Mary Grooms and her husband, 67-year-old Endsley Grooms, then helped get rid of the gun and lied to investigators to hide the crime. Jones is Mary Grooms' son.
Jones is charged with murder and armed robbery. Authorities say $44 and a checkbook were stolen from Edwards. The Grooms are each charged with murder. It wasn't known if any of the suspects had a lawyer.
