COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden announced on Tuesday a new, surprise addition to the family.
In late October, Winston, a male giraffe, made his entrance into the world.
The now 6-week-old giraffe calf was a surprise to zookeepers because all of the females are on birth control, says John Davis, curator of mammals at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.
"Winston's arrival was quite a shock, but we are very happy to have him as part of our herd," Davis expressed.
Winston marks the seventh giraffe born at the zoo since February 2009, and is now the ninth giraffe in the zoo's herd.
Winston weighed nearly 100 pounds at birth, and zookeepers say when he's fully grown could reach 18-feet tall and weigh as much as 2,600 pounds.
