RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the injury of an inmate during a confrontation with a guard at the Wake County jail.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that an officer has not returned to work since he and the inmate were hurt June 4.
Justice Department spokeswoman Noelle Talley confirmed the SBI investigation of the injury of 40-year-old Shon Demetrius McClain of Apex. An attorney for McClain says he is on life support in a hospital.
Sheriff's Capt. James Stevens says the officer was relieved from duty while he recovered from his injuries and has not returned to work.
Stevens would not talk about what happened.
The SBI will turn over the results of its investigation to the Wake County District Attorney's office.
