COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A 22-year-old South Carolina inmate is accused of threatening to kill two prosecutors.

U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins said Tuesday that Jermaine Nelson is accused of mailing threatening letters to Solicitor Trey Gowdy and Deputy Solicitor Ryan McCarty. Their judicial circuit covers Spartanburg and Cherokee counties.

Nelson is serving a 15-year sentence for burglary at maximum security McCormick Correctional Institution in McCormick. He began serving that sentence in June 2006. He could face five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of making the threats.

Wilkins said the letters were sent from the prison last October.
